Sculptra® Aesthetic works by stimulating your skin’s own natural collagen production to help increase facial volume that has been lost due to aging. It yields a very natural result by working subtly and gradually over time for a more youthful-looking appearance. It can be injected into any area that may have been affected due to volume loss, but is most commonly used to treat deep folds between the nose and mouth (nasolabial folds), also called “smile lines", lines framing the mouth (marionette lines), and chin wrinkles.

Unlike dermal fillers, results are not immediate. Sculptra aids in the production of your own collagen in response to the material injected. This process takes about 6 months, however, results can be seen sooner. Over the course of your treatments, you will notice gradual changed and a rejuvinated appearance. In order to maintain your result, one vial of Sculptra per year is the standard required maintenance regimen.

How should I prepare for my appointment?

  • It's best to avoid blood thinning medications and supplements for two weeks prior to their treatment to decrease the likelihood of bruising.

  • Avoiding alcoholic beverages for 24 hours prior to your appointment.

  • Take Arnica tablets for 3 days prior to your appointment may reduce bruising and swelling

What are the side effects or risks?

  • There is a risk of discomfort upon injection, swelling, redness, bruising and discoloration. Your face can appear “full” after your treatment due to the amount of fluid that is injected. This fullness will resolve in 24-48 hours. There is also a risk of nodule formation. Massaging your face will help prevent nodules and to stimulate collagen production.

When should I plan my appointment?

  • Because of the possible bruising and swelling, it's best to plan appointments at least 2 weeks before any upcoming events.

How many treatments do I need?

  • On average, a series of three treatments over the course of a few months may be needed. The number of injections at each session will vary, depending on the degree of correction needed and the treatment plan determined by Dr L.
