KYBELLA

If you're looking to improve your profile and are annoyed or self-conscious about the stubborn fat under your chin, Kybella may be the right treatment for you. Kybella™ is an injectable treatment for submental fullness (double chin) that can significantly improve chin contouring without the invasiveness and downtime of surgery. Kybella™ has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the reduction of submental fat. Even if you eat well and exercise, but that submental fullness under the chin just won’t go away, don’t consider surgery, consider Kybella®.

Kybella is a synthetic formulation of deoxycholic acid, a substance found naturally occurring in the body, which is synthesized and then used to break down and absorb dietary fat. When injected into the submental area, KYBELLA® destroys fat cells, resulting in a noticeable reduction in fullness under the chin. The result is a more streamlined neck and improved contour along the jaw line. Once the fat is destroyed, these cells can no longer store or accumulate fat, so further treatment is not expected once you reach your desired aesthetic goal.

KYBELLA FAQs

Am I a good candidate for Kybella?

  • Kybella may not be appropriate for everyone. This procedure may not be right for you if:

    • you have undergone previous plastic surgery procedures of the neck, chin and jawline

    • you have difficulty swallowing, bleeding problems or medical conditions that might affect the face and neck

    • you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

How should I prepare for my appointment?

  • It's best to avoid blood thinning medications and supplements for two weeks prior to their treatment to decrease the likelihood of bruising.

  • Avoiding alcoholic beverages for 24 hours prior to your appointment.

  • Taking Arnica tablets for 3 days prior to your appointment may reduce bruising and swelling

What are the side effects or risks?

  • Side effects of Kybella may include: bruising, swelling, numbness, tingling, induration, marginal mandibular nerve injury, dysphagia (difficulty swallowing), tenderness or discomfort, tissue necrosis, and redness at the site of injections.

  • Less common potential side effects include nerve injury in the area of the jaw resulting in an uneven smile or facial muscle weakness which typically resolve in an average of 6 weeks. There is also the risk of an unsatisfactory result or unacceptable, visible deformities or asymmetry in the treatment area.

What can I expect after my appointment?

  • There can be some bruising and swelling following Kybella™ treatments, similar to other injectables, and can last up to a week. The bruising can be easily covered with make-up as soon as the next day. The swelling at the injection site typically last 2 weeks, with a reduction in swelling occurring after days 4-7. Ice packs may be used to the treated area during the first 12 hours after your treatment. You can ice for 15 minutes on every hour. Post procedure instructions would include avoiding any massage to the injection site and avoiding heavy exercise the day of your treatment.

What will my results look like?

  • Fat is dissolved within 10-15 minutes of injection; however your body has an inflammatory response to the injection, causing swelling. This can take 3-4 weeks to subside. Typically results will appear within 4-6 weeks, and will continue to improve as additional treatments are administered. The treatment plan is tailored to meet the individual needs of the patient. Results are long lasting as long as your body weight does not change drastically.

How many treatments do I need?

  • The number of treatments varies from patient to patient. Dr. L will will determine the best regime during your consultation based on your age, anatomy, physiology and goals. Each KYBELLA® treatment session is given at least 1 month apart, and you should not receive more than 6 treatments. Most patients receive 5 - 6 treatments.
